The added value of the kinesiologist in rehabilitation

By Roxanne Lavoie, kinesiologist

The kinesiologist is a health professional, a specialist in physical activity, who uses movement for prevention, treatment, and performance.

Imagine a personal trainer with an in-depth understanding of muscle and cardiovascular training techniques combined with a healthcare professional who has a biomechanical understanding of your injury and the factors influencing your recovery.

The kinesiologist will be able to adapt and progress an exercise prescription based on your injury or limitation using:

  • Specific movements (strengthening, stretching, mobility, control/stability exercises, etc.);
  • Diverse training techniques;
  • Training aids (wrist support, straps, belts, etc.);
  • A planning strategy to help you progress over several months.

In a context of pain or discomfort during sports or daily movements, the kinesiologist will:

  • Conduct a brief evaluation of problematic movements and your lifestyle habits that may influence your recovery;
  • Propose a specific training plan that complements your sports practice or daily activities to optimize your performance.

In the event of an injury that requires stopping work or sports, the kinesiologist can work in multidisciplinary collaboration with a physiotherapist and/or an occupational therapist to:

  • Maintain and/or improve your overall physical condition during the forced break;
  • Implement active pain management strategies.

Although the therapists at Dextérité specialize in upper limb rehabilitation, our kinesiologist is equipped to support you, regardless of the area of your injury, considering both upper and lower limbs, in a holistic approach to progression and improvement!
