Arthritis is the most common and widespread chronic disease in Canada. There are over 100 different types, but the most common include rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, and juvenile arthritis. Since the cause of these conditions is autoimmune, meaning the immune system attacks the body’s joints, the disease’s progression is irreversible. However, this does not mean that nothing can be done to manage the associated symptoms and improve the function and quality of life for those affected! In fact, there are various therapeutic options available to you. If you have just received a diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis or if you wish to manage your condition, here are our tips:
- Learn about your diagnosis and the type of arthritis you have. Each type of arthritis is different. Better understanding your condition will help you understand the treatments available and how to manage your condition.
- Get informed about available resources. Some associations can support you in your journey, such as the Arthritis Society. This organization offers a helpline (1-800-321-1433, option 2), provides numerous relevant webinars and articles, and can refer you to dozens of resources and support groups throughout Quebec. - Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Restorative sleep, a healthy diet, and an active lifestyle can positively impact your quality of life.
- Discuss potential pharmacological treatments with your doctor. Medication can help control symptoms and may even slow the progression of the condition.
- Consult with a healthcare professional who can guide you in your reactivation and symptom management. Our occupational therapists and physiotherapists can offer solutions and treatment options tailored to your needs.
Don’t hesitate to consult with us and make an appointment for better management of your condition. We will be happy to help you cope with your condition, whatever it may be.
